Are you a Christian, or just a Dancing Marionette?

Have you ever noticed how the topics being discussed by Christians on blogs, social media, and in the churches mimics the current trends that are found on all the main media outlets?

Have you noticed how Christians allow political events and the latest media outrage to direct their attention?

Have you noticed how Christians seem to have sudden memory loss as soon as the news and media change the topic of discussion?

If you haven’t noticed this trend within the Christian community, just take a moment to pay attention to the bigger picture rather than being caught up in the waves of commentary and outrage that we find all around us and in our social media feeds. You’ll see that from one week to the next, and sometimes even from one day to the next, current topics and discussions fade into the background to be replaced by a new topic or discussion. When this happens the previous topic and discussion are forgotten, almost as though someone took a vacuum and sucked all the thoughts and memories of the individuals and the online communities had of such events. In a very real sense, it can be described as a form of collective amnesia.

This should not be the case for the Christian community.

Ephesians 4:11-14

11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

Paul warned the Christian community against being easily manipulated by crafty men, and it seems that Paul was right to warn against such. What we see on our news, media, and trending social media posts is exactly this. The problem is that the Christian community is not only failing to heed Paul’s warnings and avoiding these crafty men, they are promoting and participating in their cunning craftiness of deception. This is a major problem.

The Christian community, and its many vocal and semi-vocal leaders, pastors, and social media gurus are not fulfilling their responsibilities, nor is the common man fulfilling his. Each and every Christian has the duty to both read and understand the word of God.

Christian leaders and the Christian community are not to be dancing marionettes that act and react according to the whims of others. The duty of every Christian is to know, keep, and teach the whole word of God. The strings of the news and media marionettist are not to command the focus and actions of the Christian community.

Some will protest and ask, “But, wait, aren’t Christians supposed to be able to give guidance to the world and Godly advice concerning the relevant topics of the day?”

Well, yes, Christians are supposed to be ready at all times to share Biblical wisdom on any subject. However, there is a great deal of difference between a “relevant” topic or subject, and a “disingenuous distraction.” What commands the attention and focus of virtually all news, media, and social media trends is the world of international and national politics. Political news and media coverage is not genuine, the reporting is not unbiased, and it is not concerned with the edification or education of the reader/viewer.

The Christian community has for a long time now been content with being nothing more than a dancing marionette that is continually having their strings pulled on. But, this is not how the Christian faith is supposed to function. The Christian community is not to mimic the non-Christian world in what they focus on, in how they interact with others, or how they deal with those in error.

The Christian faith and the Christian community is distinct and different in many ways:

#1 – Christians are not to speak about people or subjects before they have actually taken the time to know the facts about what they are talking about. (Reading the news and watching tv reports is not a fact collecting effort.)

Proverbs 18:13 He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him.

#2 – Christians are not to say things they know are false or untrue. (This eliminates the purposeful spreading of false information, a favorite tactic of mankind.)

Exodus 23:1 Thou shalt not raise a false report: put not thine hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness.

Proverbs 10:18 He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool.

#3 – Christians are not to say things without thinking upon them, due to the fact that one day they will be held accountable for the things they say. (This eliminates the idea that what we say about others is unimportant.)

Matthew 12:36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

#4 – Christians are to refrain from seeking out the sins of those all around them due to the fact that they are primarily working on dealing with their own sins and shortcomings. (This eliminates the “gossip column” tendency men have to want to hear and discuss the sinful deeds of others continually.)

Matthew 7:3-5

3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?

5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.

#5 – Christians are to refrain from arguing the righteousness of God’s law word with those that openly reject it. (This eliminates the tendency most have to debate with morally compromised individuals in public and private forums.)

Matthew 7:6 Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.

#6 – Christians are to be aware not to base their personal, societal, and national beliefs on the thoughts and ideas of others, or even themselves. (This eliminates Christians from deriving their beliefs, convictions, and doctrinal positions from men.)

2 Timothy 3:12-14

12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.

13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.

14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;

#7 – Christians are to refrain from being shocked/surprised/irritated when they try to tell others they are required to obey the word of God and they become offended or antagonistic. (This eliminates the Christian from becoming frustrated, allowing them to share the truth without becoming argumentative.)

Romans 8:6-8

6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

#8 – Christians are to refrain from attacking those that disagree with them, and those that openly try to destroy them. (This eliminates the idea that in order to be elevated another must be abased. By not resorting to personal attacks or slanders the Christians leaves how best to deal with their enemies in the hands of God.)

Romans 12:17-21

17 Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.

18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.

19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

20 Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.

21 Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

#9 – Christians are to live and teach in confidence that Christ, not evil men reign, and this gives them boldness to teach the vast amounts of doctrines the world desperately needs. (This means that Christians will spend their time being productive teachers attempting to give guidance to others so that men may bring themselves into obedience to God, their families can be brought into obedience to God, and the communities and nations of men can be brought into obedience to God.)

Matthew 28:18-20

18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

#10 – Christians are not to separate themselves from the sinners of the world, they are rather to attempt to serve and disciple them. (This eliminates the idea that those with differing beliefs, both religious or political, is an enemy to be attacked, ridiculed, or belittled. These are not the enemy, they are the mission field.)

1 Corinthians 5:9-13

9 I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators:

10 Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world.

11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolator, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.

12 For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within?

13 But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.

#11 – Christians are to serve, assist, and attempt to help all men, but especially their enemies. (This turns the world upside down and rids the Christian community of the tit for tat pagan practice of seeking to harm and destroy those that would seek to harm or destroy them.)

#12 – The Christians are not to focus on gaining power or control over other men, because God already has all such matters under complete and unwavering control. (This eliminates Christians from becoming unduly concerned about the affairs of nations which allows them to do their work of discipleship with the confidence of victory.)

Daniel 4:34-37

34 And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honoured him that liveth for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation:

35 And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?

36 At the same time my reason returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, mine honour and brightness returned unto me; and my counsellors and my lords sought unto me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added unto me.

37 Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his ways judgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to abase.

#13 – The Christians are to live and disciple the nations with a sense of humility and pity towards the men and nations they are attempting to reach with the Word of God. The rebellion of sinful men and nations is a fruitless endeavor, against Christ their can be no victory. (This eliminates a haughty and arrogant spirit from dominating the Christians interactions with those that reject God and His Word.)

Psalms 2:1-12

1 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?

2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying,

3 Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.

4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.

5 Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.

6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.

7 I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.

8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.

9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.

10 Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.

11 Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.

12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

In order for the Christians to perform their duty to disciple the nations, it requires that they act and interact differently than the non-christian world.

In order for the Christians to avoid having their strings pulled by cunning and crafty men requires that they know the word of God, they keep the word of God, and they teach the word of God.

If this is done, Christians can earn reward here now on earth, and an even greater reward in heaven to come.

Don’t act like the world, act like a Christian. And if this is done we’ll turn the world upside down.
